According to Arab historians, the well has been in use for 4000 years.
All traditions agree that the mighty God created the well to provide “Hajar” the second wife, after “Sara” of Prophet “Ibrahim” (peace be upon him), and her baby Prophet “Ismail” (peace be upon him) with water in the hot, dry valley they were in, called “Mecca” around the year 2000 BC.
Prophet “Ibrahim” (peace be upon him) settled his family there and left them as part of God’s mission for him. The first thing “Hajar” had to do was look for water in the area. In her desperate search for water, “Hajar” ran seven times back and forth in the scorching heat between the two hills of “Safa and Marwa” to find water for her baby who was dying of thirst. She was searching for it while watching her infant and would run back whenever she could not see him. The mighty God saw her effort and miraculously blessed the spot with a water spring, at the feet of Prophet “Ismail” (peace be upon him). The name of the well comes from the phrase Zome Zome, meaning “stop” a command repeated by “Hajar” during her attempt to contain the spring water.
